Salvage cases

Why call Sea-Help in case of an average?

The skippers are being surprised by heavy storms more and more frequently.

These storms often take only minutes, but the damage on the yachts are still devastating.

In addition to our breakdown service we have been performing salvages on the Croatian Adriatic since our foundation in May 2005.

Approximately 150 yachts run ashore annually, because the anchor does not withstand or because the engine breaks down. The peak was reached in the summer 2006, when over 50 yachts sank.

The salvages are principally paid by the owner, but when the yacht has a third party liability insurance (Kasko), You “can” claim the salvage costs from the insurance company.

Very often Croatian fisher boats or diving centres offer salvages.

However, they are not liable in case of any damage which is unnecessarily caused during the salvage.

Numerous yachts sank during the salvage and the insurance company did not pay, because the insurance expert had not been able to establish the cause of average.

We are insured against damage which may occur during the salvage or against total loss of the insurance object up to 10 mil. €.

If during a salvage a tank breaks and fuel leaks out (ecological damage), the client of the salvage and thus the owner is liable.

Not with us! We are insured!

How do I act in case of an average?

   1.         Contact Sea-Help immediately. (Sea-Help will immediately inform the authorities, SAR, the captain)

   2.         Sea-Help will be there as soon as possible to do damage control.

(The owner is also obliged to do damage control.)

   3.         Contact insurance company (in case of a third party liability insurance - Kasko)

   4.         Average report at the competent harbour office

   5.         Sea-Help will make on obliging, written offer.

   6.         Salvage of the yacht by an authorized salvage company.

   7.         Declare the location of the yacht to the insurance expert.

If Sea-Help does the salvage, the calculation is done directly with the insurance company.

We have been performing all our salvages successfully without any damage since May 2005.
